Althea Woodland Nursing Home
This nursing home is located in Silver Spring, Maryland, on Daleview Drive, and accommodates 50 residents, which is a pretty small nursing home. It has been a fixture in Silver Spring for over 50 years.
This is a story of rags to riches to... so so. The riches were back in 2009, it was one of just two Maryland nursing homes with a five-star rating earning it a spot on the coveted "America's Best Nursing Homes" list.
Today, it receives average – above average Medicare ratings, with above average staffing and quality ratings. It does suffer in health inspection ratings, with above average deficiencies. Being an "average" nursing home is typical in Silver Spring but there are a few that stand above the crowd.

- Oakview Rehabilitation and Nursing Center: This slightly above average nursing home is a 9-minute, 4.8-mile drive from Althea Woodland
- Arcola Health and Rehabilitation Center: A nursing home with pretty good health inspections and quality measures but abysmal staffing, which is often a harbinger of nursing home lawsuit for inadequate care. Arcola is a three-mile drive from Althea Woodland but it takes 9 minutes by car in the brutal Silver Spring traffic.
- Woodside Center: This top rated nursing home is 4.2 miles of most Capital Beltway from Althea Woodland
- Fox Chase Rehab & Nursing Center: This above average nursing home is also accessible by the Captial Beltway. It is about 5.3 miles away.This is another "it would be great if the staffing was not poor" nursing homes.
- NMS Healthcare of Springbrook: This northern Silver Spring nursing home is 7.4 miles from Althea but it is a 20-minute drive. This nursing home is a little schizophrenic. Its quality measures are excellent and its health inspections are awful.
A 2015 inspection of Althea raised a number of concerns that if not solved could create conditions which lead to nursing home lawsuits. The first deficiency that is of concern is the failure to adequately care for its residents that need special services.
There is a laundry list of these types of services: trach suctioning, injections, foot care, prostheses, colostomy, urostomy, ileostomy, tracheostomy care,and respiratory care. This is a concern because these are the patients who may be predisposed to having problems that lead to real issues that must be addressed. Foot care is a concern for nursing home patients, particularly those that are immobile, because of the high risk of bed sores.
The second big concern that jumps out is that the facility was cited for not having an adequate program to investigate, control and keeps infections from spreading. Obviously, infections are a big issue for nursing home patients.
StaffingLet's give credit where credit is due. No Silver Spring nursing home has more staffing than Althea Woodland. This tells us they want to be a good nursing home and they are trying to get back to good old days in 2009 when they were a top nursing home.
QualityAs you will see in the ratings below, Althea has its good quality points and its bad quality points. The biggest issue that jumps off the page is how many patients lose mobility when they go to this facility. Is this Althea Woodland's fault? Are they doing something wrong? It is really hard to say.
